Anthony P. Marino, Ph.D.

Biomechanics Associate

Dr. Anthony P. Marino is a Biomechanics Associate at Guidance Engineering and Applied Research specializing in injury biomechanics and accident reconstruction. Dr. Marino uses biomechanical techniques that apply principles of mechanical engineering to the human body to analyze injuries during sports and recreational activities, motor vehicle accidents, and other impact events. For these analyses, he determines the forces and motions experienced during each event and compares them with those required to cause an injury, using the injuries as evidence to determine how the accident occurred. In addition, Dr. Marino has investigated injury risk using anthropometric testing devices (ATDs), computational modeling, and statistical analyses. He continues to engage in research on impact biomechanics, head-and-neck biomechanics, and the application of computational methods to characterize human response during dynamic loading.

Dr. Marino has conducted biomechanical research to characterize head kinematics and injury risk during sports-related head impacts, evaluate the protective performance of helmets and other personal protective equipment, and simulate human movement under impact and loading conditions with musculoskeletal models. Prior to joining Guidance Engineering, Dr. Marino conducted research at the Clemson Headgear Impact Performance Laboratory as a graduate research assistant, where he compared Hybrid III ATD with an OpenSim-based musculoskeletal model to evaluate head and neck responses during sports-related impacts. This work included developing sensitivity analyses to assess how variations in neckform biofidelity and tissue properties affect predicted injury metrics, and validating model outputs against physical ATD test data across a range of loading conditions.
